The Drum Major AwardMr. James & Mrs. Tamika Jones | Love Jones 4 Kids Foundation
The Love Jones 4 Kids Foundation is a non-profit community based organization that focuses on the needs of children in San Jose, CA. Founded in 2008 by James & Tamika Jones, their goal is to enrich the lives of children living in disadvantaged and underserved communities by conducting and sponsoring a variety of programs to help them overcome obstacles, stay in school, and prepare for challenges in life.
Every year they pride themselves on visiting local homeless shelters providing hope and meals to the residents. This year they started the 1st Annual "Power of A Sandwich" event where they had over 20 volunteers come together to make 1,000 sandwiches for the homeless. They took sandwiches to the homeless men, women and children who were staying in St. James Park and also dropped off boxes to the Emergency Housing Consortium, San Jose Family Shelter and City Team Ministries. They also host a Youth Football Camp FREE of charge every year to 250 children in the San Jose community. At the camp they provide free lunch, snacks, goodie bags and a camp uniform (T-Shirt & Shorts). This year they are excited to be hosting their Annual "Toast to Success" here in San Jose to help raise funds for the San Jose Family shelter where James was a resident during his childhood.
James was born and raised in San Jose where he attended Gunderson High School and San Jose State University. James had to overcome many obstacles growing up, as he and his mother moved around from different homeless shelters. James eventually moved in with his paternal grandmother during high school to help his mother get back on her feet. While attending Gunderson High School, James lettered in Basketball, Track & Football. During his senior year he was the team's Most Valuable Player as a quarterback. Upon graduating he received a full athletic scholarship to San Jose State University where he majored in Sociology.
James was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 3rd round of the 2007 draft. He posted one of the top pass-catching seasons in Green Bay annals for a rookie, with his 47 catches and 676 yards both ranking fourth in club history. In 2011 he helped the Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl! His humble beginnings influenced him to become actively involved in community events upon entering the NFL.
James is now home playing for the Oakland Raiders! He is excited to be home and serve the community that helped him get to where he is today.
Tamika is the proud wife of James who has been actively involved in her community her whole life. She grew up in Southern California (Carson, CA). After high school she attended San Jose State University where she met James. During her 4-years at San Jose State University she was involved in the Black Student Union, the CHAD Club, NPHC and AAMPC. During the spring of 2005, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Eta Omega Chapter which is a widely respected community service based organization.
Since LJ4K's inception, Tamika has worked tirelessly to put James' vision into action and along with a host of volunteers, has seen the foundation grow and positively affect the lives of many children in San Jose, CA.
"We truly believe that giving back takes more than just shelling out money. We want to be hands on and visible in the community. We want to be known for giving hands up, not hand outs". -James & Tamika Jones
