Dr. MLK Humanitarian Gleaner Award 2012 RecipientBertha Starks
Bertha Starks is the youngest of three born in Texas. She's the mother of five adult children (JJ (deceased), Eugene, Isaac, Dan, and Jackie). Bertha lived and raised her family in Enid, Oklahoma, where she was always helping others in the community and church (St. Stephens A.M.E. Church in Enid, Oklahoma).
Bertha moved to San Jose, CA in the mid 70's and became a member of St. James A.M.E. Church under the ministry of Rev. Dr. Herman Hyatt Sr. Ever since then she has been on various auxiliaries such as the Stewardess Board, Local/Conference Usher boards, and of course the Josephine Young Women's Missionary Society. Bertha took part in community outreach ministries with the Josephine Young Women's Missionary Society that included feeding the hungry, and sheltering the homeless. Her other community involvement consisted of being a member of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens and Organizations, helping out at the African American Community Service Agency, being a foster grandparent, volunteering at Juneteenth, and participating in The Prison Ministry at St. James A.M.E. Church.
Bertha has been a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant for many years not only beautifying the outside but helping men and women build their self-esteem by holding beauty classes at Inn Vision and through out the bay area.
