Statement on Hurricane Katrina

September 15, 2005 San Jose, CA

Hurricane Katrina has devastated the African American community, not only locally in New Orleans but also nationally. African American women, men, and children have lost their lives. Hundreds of thousands of African Americans have been displaced. They have no homes or jobs. They have become America’s newest refugees.

We cannot allow America to turn its back on the refugees. We must come together as a community and help them in any way that we can. If that means opening our own homes, we will. If that means finding the refugees jobs, we will. If that means helping with donations, we will. We must do what is right. That’s why we are asking the community to join us at our fundraisers and do what it takes to our community whole again.
